The Role of AI in Matchmaking

By: Brad Blettner, Chief Executive Officer, Selective Search

Artificial intelligence is quickly becoming the newest promise in the dating industry. Compatibility engines, automated coaching, and algorithm-driven matching are being positioned as the next evolution of how people find relationships.

The assumption behind all of it is simple: more data and better algorithms will produce better matches.

For mass-market dating platforms, that logic may hold. But for accomplished professionals who approach the most important decisions in their lives with rigor and intention, it overlooks something fundamental. Relationships are not data exercises. They are human compatibility decisions.

How Selective Search thinks about AI is clear: matchmaking should be human-led and AI-informed. Technology and data science improve insight and operational efficiency. But compatibility decisions are made by experienced professionals who understand the person — not just the profile.

Consider how accomplished professionals approach other high-stakes decisions. Investment strategy is guided by financial advisors. Legal decisions are handled by attorneys. Executive hiring often relies on retained search firms. In each case, technology supports the analysis — but experienced professionals interpret the information, apply judgment, and take accountability for the recommendation.

Relationships deserve the same level of intentionality. Choosing a life partner influences emotional wellbeing, family dynamics, lifestyle, and long-term happiness. Delegating that decision to a recommendation engine may be efficient. But efficiency alone doesn’t produce alignment. Expert judgment does.

This is what we consistently hear from clients who come to us after years on dating apps. They aren’t rejecting technology. They’re recognizing that the most important search of their lives deserves the same caliber of advisor they’d bring to any other major decision.

For high-achieving professionals specifically, several realities make the algorithm-first model particularly ineffective.

  • Time: The most successful individuals treat time as their most constrained resource. Endless profile screening, messaging cycles, and mismatched introductions represent an inefficient use of energy that could be directed toward work, family, or meaningful relationships.
  • Privacy: Senior executives and public-facing professionals often can’t afford the visibility that comes with a public digital profile. Discretion matters — and algorithm-driven platforms aren’t designed for it.
  • Quality over volume: In professional life, successful people don’t solve complex decisions by increasing volume. They solve them by increasing expertise. The same applies to relationships. Compatibility involves emotional readiness, communication style, and long-term vision — variables that, in our experience, don’t reduce cleanly to a preference filter or a compatibility score.

A common misconception is that rejecting algorithmic matching means rejecting technology entirely. It doesn’t.

At Selective Search, we use modern data tools and analysis across our business — for candidate sourcing, market research, and operational efficiency. These capabilities make our search process more informed and more efficient.

More importantly, they allow our matchmakers to spend less time on administrative tasks and more time where it matters most — understanding clients, evaluating compatibility, and building trusted relationships.

We invest in technology so that every client interaction is human, informed, and intentional. What technology doesn’t do is determine compatibility. That distinction matters.

Organizing information is fundamentally different from evaluating whether two people belong together. A matchmaker must assess interpersonal dynamics, emotional readiness, communication patterns, and the often-significant gap between someone’s stated preferences and their actual behavioral compatibility. Those assessments require human context, built through direct conversation and professional experience.

AI can organize information. A matchmaker understands people.

In most algorithm-driven platforms, the matching process is opaque. A compatibility score is generated. A profile appears. If the match doesn’t connect, there’s rarely an explanation for why it was suggested in the first place.

Human-led matchmaking operates differently. A professional matchmaker evaluates each introduction and can explain the reasoning behind it — the lifestyle alignment they observed, the communication dynamics they considered, the long-term factors they weighed. When an introduction doesn’t land, that insight directly informs the next step in the search.

For clients making a serious investment in finding a partner, that level of accountability matters. Someone is standing behind the introduction — and that’s not something an algorithm can offer. That matchmaker is also better equipped than ever, with access to stronger research, broader candidate intelligence, and the operational support that allows them to stay fully focused on the client and the decision at hand.

Artificial intelligence will continue to shape this industry. The question isn’t whether AI belongs in matchmaking. It’s where it belongs and how Selective Search thinks about AI. We actively invest in the tools and technology that make our team sharper — so our matchmakers are operating with better information, greater efficiency, and complete focus on the client and the relationship they’re trying to build.

After nearly three decades of this work, what we consistently see is this: people are not always the best judges of what they need in a partner. Clients often arrive with a clear list of preferences shaped by past experience. But those preferences don’t always correlate with long-term compatibility.

Professional matchmakers are trained to recognize the difference — between what someone says they want and what their actual behavior and history suggest they need. Those insights emerge through conversation and relationship, not through a questionnaire or a scoring model.

The most effective approach isn’t technology alone or human judgment alone. It’s the thoughtful integration of both — where data and modern tools improve the intelligence behind the process, and experienced professionals make the decisions that actually matter.

At Selective Search, we operate from a simple principle: human matchmakers, technology-supported process.

Data and modern tools help us work intelligently. But the decision about who you meet is always made by a professional who understands you, evaluates context, and stands behind the introduction.

Because the more important the decision, the more people want a person involved in making it.

If you approach your career, investments, and health with strategy and expertise — your relationships deserve the same level of intentionality.
